WordPress Link Structure

The WordPress Default Link Structure is not search engine friendly. If you have a WordPress blog check the URL of your posts in your browser address bar. If it ends in /?p= and then a number, none of your post titles will be searchable by search engines. If you want your WordPress titles to rank with search engines you need to change from the Default Structure to Custom Structure. In this 4 1/2 minute video I shows you how to make your WordPress Posts have a searchable URL by using the custom WordPress Link Structure.

I am aware of this capability and to date have not chosen to use it. The reason is that I don’t know what happens to all the links I have out there, both in my own website and all the forums I visit and leave links. Will they still work or is the name actually changed in my sites data base? If they still work, then I would definitely do this.

In the past month I’ve started my own blog, and the thing that eludes me is what the plugin you use to share this blog on all of the different social networking sites? It looks awesome, but I can’t seem to find a name for it anywhere.

Some hosts do not allow you to use the wordpress structure (GoDaddy sometimes does this). If that’s the case, you need to edit the HTTPACCESS file or create one and upload it.

  Thanks Melissa- You are right. I had problems with this and had to change permissions so put up another post- http://PowerLineTraining.com/wordpress-permissions/ but it only helps if one has access to server files. That’s why I recommend BuleHost in another post.

I’m sorry, but I disagree –this is a myth. The default WordPress link structure does not actually inhibit search engine spiders from finding your posts. I’ve personally never had this problem on my own blog, which has been up since 2008.
I think as long as your blog post titles use simple descriptive text (no numbers or strange characters) in a standard H1 or H2 tag, Google will find them. While pretty permalinks look nice and are easily read by human eyes, they in no way improve search engine visibility in my opinion.

The real problem is in getting people to read posts and actually take the time to respond with meaningful comments.

  Thanks for your comment and you are certainly welcome to your opinion. Search engines value keywords. The more places they show up, the higher the potential ranking. Taking a post title and allowing it to be read as /?p=726 rather than the actual keyword rich title gives away one opportunity. Have some fun- type that /?p=726 into Google’s search box and see how many blog posts come up. Search engines categorize what they find. Do you want them categorizing your posts with those endings? Anybody else want to chime in?

  Right Brian, and nobody knows what the search engines’ algorithms are- and that’s the way they want it. All you have to do is go to Google and search /?p= and put in any 3 digit number and thousands of blogs show up. If Google is categorizing them with those numbers doesn’t that mean that Google would have used the title instead of the numbers if the title had been in the URL? You shouldn’t say search engines can’t index sites with the default permalink ?p=123 in it. The keyphrase in URL *helps* A LOT, but it is not mandatory. Having the words in the title tag / headline is way more important, not to mention incoming links and getting the page indexed in the first place.

But other than that, sound advice. And you picked the best permalink option, /%postname%/ which is good. Other great options is /%post_id%/%postname%/.

For those thinking about it, /%category%/ makes URL very clunky, so I wouldn’t use it, but it might be good for category-based sites, e.g. different product categories.

Changing your wordpress permalinks is very smart. Your post titles should contain keywords…With Phil’s technique you also get your keyword into your URL. That will help with the off page SEO. Nice video Phil!
